Introduction

Hookline gives you a URL that captures any HTTP request. You can watch requests arrive live, inspect them, replay them, forward them to your servers and pipe them to localhost through a CLI tunnel.

Capture your first webhook#

  1. Open Get a webhook URL. You get a temporary endpoint right away, no account needed. It lasts 24 hours and keeps up to 100 requests.

  2. Send it something:

    curl -X POST https://<your instance>/h/<slug>/orders \
      -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
      -d '{"id": "ord_123", "status": "paid"}'

  3. The request shows up in the inbox within about a tenth of a second, with its method, path, headers, query and body.

To keep the endpoint, sign up. During onboarding you can claim it into your new organization along with everything it captured.

Send webhooks to your laptop#

Install the CLI, sign in once, and forward an endpoint to your local server:

hookline login
hookline listen <slug> --forward http://localhost:3000/api/webhooks

Every request the endpoint captures is now also sent to localhost:3000, and your server's status code is printed next to it. The endpoint keeps capturing while you are offline, so you can replay anything you missed.

Where to next#

  • Endpoints: URLs, custom responses, retention and templates.
  • Inbox: filters, search, body views and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Destinations: forward to your servers, with filters and retries.
  • Signature verification: check that Stripe, GitHub and others really sent the webhook.
  • REST API: automate all of it with an API key.
